How Road Rage Works

Ever wondered about the psychology behind road rage? Read on to find out more!

So what do you think of when you hear the term "road rage"? It's one of those catch phrases everyone has heard, and yet there is no common definition we can all use. Often, people use terms like "road rage" and "aggressive driving" interchangeably.

And while some might say that aggressive driving includes everything from cutting someone off on purpose to tailgating to making obscene gestures andcursing at other drivers, others might claim road rage refers only to incidents where violence erupts between drivers and passengers -- in or around cars. (There are just as many who might reverse those two definitions.) One thing is certain -- road rage is a dangerous phenomenon that can happen to any one of us, either as a perpetrator or a victim.

Driving a car is stressful -- it's inherently dangerous because even if you're the safest driver in the world, there are a lot different variables that you can't predict, like weather, traffic, accidents, and road work. And what about all those other people on the road? Some of them aren't just bad drivers, they're engaging in risky behavior. Some of them even do things specifically to make you angry or prevent you from getting to where you need to go.

That's the thought progression someone might have just before switching into road-rage mode, leading a driver to make irrational decisions very quickly. All of a sudden, you might be thinking: They need to know that what they're doing is dangerous and stupid, and you should show them. In fact, you should punish them.

There's no denying that driving can be a risky and emotional experience. For many of us, our cars are an extension of our personality, and it might be the most expensive possession we own. When we drive, we're aware that there's potential for injury and property damage. Driving might be an expression of freedom for some, but it's also an activity that tends to increase our stress levels, even if we're not aware of it at the time. Driving is also a communal activity. You might think of driving in terms of your own individual experience. But once you pull into traffic, you've joined a community of other drivers, all of whom have their own goals, fears and driving skills. Psychologists Dr. Leon James and Dr. Diane Nahl say that one factor in road rage is our tendency to concentrate on ourselves while dismissing the communal aspect of driving. It's very easy to perceive another driver's actions in terms of how it affects us, which in turn makes it easy to transition into anger [source: James, Nahl]. Once an expert witness to Congress on traffic psychology, Dr. James, known as "Dr. Driving," believes that the core cause of road rage isn't due to traffic jams or more drivers on the road -- but how our culture views aggressive driving [source: Dr. Driving.org].

In our culture, children learn that the normal rules regarding behavior and civility don't apply when driving a car. They may see their parents engage in competitive-driving behaviors, maneuvering the car with multiple lane changes or traveling at high speeds in a rush to get to a destination. Some popular films and television shows portray aggressive driving as a positive, or at the very least, an exciting activity. To complicate matters, for years pop psychologists suggested that the best way to relieve anger and stress was to vent your frustration, essentially giving into and feeding your negative emotions. However, psychological studies show that venting doesn't help relieve anger at all. In a road rage situation, venting can help escalate an incident into a violent encounter. Americans also tend to view a person who backs away from confrontation as a coward, creating a sense of pressure on a driver to not give up any ground even when no one is judging him. With that in mind, it's no surprise that violent encounters happen occasionally. Almost everyone is predisposed to engaging in irrational behavior while driving -- Dr. James even goes so far as to say that most people are emotionally impaired when they drive [source: James]. The key, psychologists say, is being aware of your emotional state and making the right choices, even when you are tempted to act out emotionally.

Winter Car Maintenance Tips

Here are some good winter car care tips.

1.  As you tackle fall's bounty on your lawn, leave some energy for removing the leaves that find their way into your vehicle.
Leaves, twigs and other organic matter can cause havoc with gutters on your house — and the equivalent on your car. When debris builds up in areas of your car where water is supposed to flow out, you can get leaks or corrosion. The air plenum near the windshield is a classic spot where this can happen. If you have a sunroof, open it up and poke around in there, too. Sunroofs have drains that flow water that sneaks past the seals down to the ground. Leaf gunk in there can make for wet headliners or worse. Less common, but more problematic: Animals may make nests in the engine compartment or airbox. You may need a mechanic and an animal trapper to fully solve this problem.

2. So-called "all-season" tires have been on the market for decades. Coupled with front-wheel-drive and anti-skid systems, they have allowed many folks to avoid mounting a true snow tire for the winter months. But there are two trends in tires you should be aware of:
A) Styling priorities have led to manufacturers fitting wider, low-profile tires on a variety of cars. Wide and low profile, on balance, makes a tire worse in the snow. Pressures to improve tire fuel economy have also worked against the snow utility of all-seasons.
B) Winter tires have improved their behavior from the era of knobby snow tires. New tread patterns and rubber compounds make them quieter on dry roads, yet even more effective on frozen stuff.
If you choose to go with winter tires, note that vendors such as The Tire Rack and Discount Tire Direct offer packages with the tires already mounted on a new set of wheels. Switching the entire wheel for the winter is more cost-effective than having two sets of tires mounted on your existing wheels twice a year.

3. Fog, snow and rain will cut down your visibility in winter. Check your wiper blades, which have a lifespan of about a year. If your car doesn’t have the newer "beam blade" style wipers, consider a pair, especially for the winter months. The beam style blades don't have an external spring to freeze up. When snow or other freezing precipitation threaten, pop your wipers up when you park so they're not touching the windshield. This little trick will make it easier to scrape your windshield and reduce the chance that you burn out the wiper motor by having them turn on while the blades are frozen in place.

4. Winter puts more stress on your battery, particularly if you park your car outdoors. Avoid the sinking feeling of hearing nothing when you hit the ignition with a proactive check of your battery and charging system now. Repair shops don't usually charge very much to load-test your battery, and some car-parts stores will do it for free. If you find out your battery's going south, you can replace it at your convenience, instead of being at the mercy of whomever your dead car’s been towed to. Note that some big-box stores such as Costco offer a good price on batteries for those of you willing to change one yourself (not usually all that hard, though batteries are heavy.)

5. To improve aerodynamics and save fuel, today’s cars are equipped with increasingly elaborate underbody panels and low-hanging air dams. These can be vulnerable to damage, and driving over a snowdrift in the winter could turn a small problem into a more expensive one. So before the ground’s too chilly to lie on, take a look under the car, starting from the front, to see if there's anything loose flapping about. Maybe you can just pop it back into place. Maybe a zip tie will take care of it.

Keep your pet safe while driving, not only for your animal’s health and well-being, but for your wallet’s sake as well!

States Cracking Down On Dogs Behind The Wheel

If it's any indication of the danger free-roaming pets face in a vehicle, New Hampshire, the country's only state that does not have a mandatory seat belt law, actually requires dogs to buckle up.

Live free or die, goes the state's motto, but Spike and Spot don't have that liberty. And with due reason. Seven other states, Connecticut, California, Massachusetts, Nevada, Washington, Oregon and Rhode Island require owners to kennel or tether animals because of the severe danger the sudden stops and potential collisions pose to pets. An unrestrained dog can land you with a ticket between $50 and $200.

Animal lovers would almost always rather take their pet with them to run errands or on a road trip than leave them at home or at a pet motel. But for all that love for canines, most drivers have seen "dog people" take things too far, driving with their dogs in their laps or lying around their shoulders like a neck pillow and, yes, sometimes at the wheel.
And it's a double dose of danger: for the distracted driver and the unrestrained animal.

2012 Honda CR-Z Offers Performance And MPG

The 2012 Honda CR-Z offers performance and MPG.

The Honda CR-Z was released with a flurry of interest. Unlike any other hybrid on the market, it promised performance and sporty driving dynamics without sacrificing fuel economy. And, with a base price of $19,545, the 2012 CR-Z is also a stellar value.

There are two models available for the 2012 model year. There’s the base CR-Z and a well-equipped EX. Based models feature a six-speed manual transmission with and a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) is available as an option.

The range-topping EX adds High-Intensity Discharge (HID) Headlights with Auto-On/Off, fog lights, a 360-Watt AM/FM/CD Premium Audio System with seven speakers including subwoofer, Bluetooth HandsFreeLink, perforated leather-wrapped steering wheel, and more. The CR-Z EX is also available with the Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System with voice recognition.

All CR-Z models are powered by a unique variation of Honda’s original IMA technology, which originally debuted on the 2000 Honda Insight, the first hybrid vehicle available for sale in North America. The system combined a four-cylinder engine with the Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) system’s DC brushless electric motor. The system delivers a combined peak output of 122 horsepower and 128 lb-ft. of torque.

The Honda’s sporty side or fuel-efficient side can be honed with its three-mode drive system, which features individual modes of performance for Sport, Normal and Economy driving styles:

  • Sport mode enhances engine throttle responsiveness, electric power steering effort and the electric motor power assist.
  • Normal mode standardizes steering, engine response, motor assist and air conditioning settings.
  • Econ mode optimizes throttle angle for smooth acceleration, lower engine rpm and limiting power and torque by approximately 4 percent. It can also reduce the air conditioning’s overall load on the engine and modify the cruise control to operate more efficiently.

Best of all, this sport hybrid doesn’t sacrifice fuel economy. EPA-estimated fuel economy is 35/39/37 city/highway/combined mpg on CVT-equipped models and 31/37/34 city/highway/combined mpg on manual models.

Honda Announces 2012 Civic Natural Gas Pricing

The 2012 Honda Civic Natural Gas will be in showrooms October 18th!

The all-new 2012 Honda Civic Natural Gas (formally known as the Civic GX), which is the only dedicated natural gas-powered passenger vehicle manufactured and sold in the U.S., will feature a base price of $26,155.

Honda has long supported alternative fuel vehicles, and the addition of the Civic Natural Gas will continue that objective. The CNG-powered model will join the standard Civic and Civic Hybrid, all of which have been completely redesigned for the 2012 model year.

Although the Civic GX was once reserved for select markets, the new Civic Natural Gas will be available to retail customers at 200 dealers in 35 states.

The Civic Natural Gas offers many benefits for the eco-conscious customer, not to mention significantly reduced operating costs compared to gasoline-powered models as well as lower fuel costs. As an alternative-fuel vehicle with extremely low smog-forming emissions, the Civic Natural Gas currently qualifies for a state-issued decal allowing single-occupant access to High-Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) “carpool” lanes in California and several other states. The Civic Natural Gas engine produces almost zero smog-forming emissions and is the cleanest internal-combustion vehicle certified by the EPA (Tier-II, Bin-2 and ILEV certification as of August 2010).

A 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine powers the new Civic Natural Gas. A 5-speed automatic transmission is standard equipment and helps the vehicle achieve anEPA-rated city/highway/combined fuel economy of 27/38/31 miles per gallon (gasoline-gallon equivalent).

Should You Lease Or Buy A Car?

When it comes to buying or leasing a car the options can be confusing. To help you make an informed decision we have provided the information below. We hope you find it informative and useful.

When you buy the new or used car you pay for the entire cost of the vehicle. When you lease the new or used car, you pay for only a portion of the vehicle’s cost, which is the part you use during the time you are driving it.

Buying

Who Owns It

Whether you pay for the car with cash, or finance it and make monthly payments, either way it’s yours. Of course, if you’re financing it, you’ll have to meet the obligations the lender requires, like a certain down payment amount and timely monthly payments. If you don’t, they have the right to repossess it.

Up-front Costs

If you’re financing it, the bank will probably request a down payment. You can also trade-in another vehicle and use any equity towards your down payment. The amount of the down payment is usually based on the lender’s requirements and your credit score.

Future Value

Your vehicle will be worth whatever you can sell it for in the future and that depends on how well you maintain it. (Be smart and protect your investment with regular scheduled maintenance by a factory-authorized facility!)

End of Payments

Once you’ve paid off what you owe on your contract, that’s it. Your vehicle is 100% yours. The lending institution will send you a Lien Release as proof that the vehicle is completely paid off and all yours.

Leasing

Who Owns It

You do not own the car when you lease. You’re paying for the use of the vehicle, but the finance institution that you leased it through actually owns it. This is usually why you pay less per month in a lease than if you were to buy the car. .

Up-front Costs

Leases often do not require any type of a down payment. All you usually have to pay is the first month’s payment, a security deposit, the acquisition fee and other fees and taxes. But, as with a purchase, if you want to lower your monthly payments you can always pay more upfront.

Future Value

In most leases you don’t end up owning it so you don’t end up selling it. That’s the financial institution’s job. Although you may have mileage limits and wear and tear guidelines that, if you exceed them, could cost you extra money when you turn your vehicle back in.

End of Payments

Most people return the vehicle at the end of the lease term. But some like to purchase it during their lease or at the end. Others like to trade it in before their lease is over. Just ask us about these different options before signing any paperwork and we’ll make sure you have your lease set up the way you want it.

Best Cars to Lease

The best cars to lease are those with the best book value after the term of the lease. Since they depreciate less, you pay less. Review the lease ratings to see which cars retain their value.

Facebook 9/11 Memorial App

To commemorate the 10-year anniversary of September 11th, Facebook has created an application that allows you to dedicate your status to a victim of the terrorist attacks. This Facebook Memorial gives you the opportunity to honor and revere the 3,000 who died in the 9/11/01 attacks, along with the six who died in the World Trade Center bombing in 1993.

In collaboration with the National September 11 Memorial and Museum, the app will work for those members of the social media marketing community who choose to donate their status to the cause. They will then have the option to dedicate their status to a specific victim of the attacks, or to have one given to them.

So if you are part of the 750 million member Facebook or the 100 million member Twitter community, choose to commemorate the 10th anniversary of this event and share it with others. Even if you don’t want to dedicate your Facebook status to the cause, join in the effort to reflect and honor the heroes of that day.

Many have already expressed their willingness to participate in this movement on the official 9/11 Memorial Facebook page, the place to get started.

Is texting while driving really worse than drunk driving?

Is texting while driving really worse than drunk driving? That’s the question that  Christopher Neiger from “How Stuff Works” asked. Read more to find out his conclusion.

Texting, or short message service(SMS), is a quick form of communication that allows users to send 160 characters or less to and from their cell phones and smartphones. A study by the Pew Research group in 2009 and 2010 reported that out of the number of Americans who have cell phones, 58 percent of adults and 66 percent of teens use them to text [source:Motavalli]. With these high percentages of Americans using text messaging every year, many are bringing the habit along with them when they drive. The same Pew study showed that 34 percent of teens who use their phone for texting said they've done it while driving, and 47 percent of adults who texted said they had done it while driving, too [source: Motavalli].

In 2008, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported that almost 6,000 fatalities and over half of a million injuries were due to accidents caused by drivers who were distracted [source: Motavalli]. The study wasn't focused on texting, but it does show the seriousness of driving while distracted. Like many other driving distractions, texting involves a certain amount of mental attention as well as physical application which may be why 28 states have banned drivers from texting while operating a vehicle [source: Motavalli].

But is there really proof that texting while driving is more dangerous than drunk driving? Even though research is just now being done to measure the effects of texting while driving, some in the automotive industry and others in research circles say that texting is definitely more dangerous than drunk driving. Mainly because taking a driver's eyes off the road significantly cuts down on his or her ability to react to changes.

In 2009, Car and Driver conducted a driving test with their editor-in-chief and an intern to prove or disprove that texting while driving was more dangerous than drunk driving. The first step of their experiment was to test and measure the reaction times of both drivers while driving sober with no distractions, and then while reading and sending text messages on their cell phones. A light mounted to the front windshield simulated a car braking in front of them [source:Austin].

As they read and sent text messages, their response time was measured based on the time it took between when the brake light came on and when the driver applied the brakes at both 35 miles per hour (56.3 kilometers per hour) and at 70 miles per hour (112.7 kilometers per hour) [source: Chang]. Both drivers had a longer response time while reading and sending the text messages when compared to driving without any distractions. After the initial test, both drivers then consumed alcohol and reached the legal driving limit for intoxication in their state. After running the same test again while driving drunk, response times for both drivers were better when the driver was drunk, compared to when they were reading or sending text messages while sober. Car and Driver writers mentioned that the test was performed on a closed airport runway, with no road signs and no turns. Although this test was performed on a closed course, slow response times due to texting could result in serious consequences in real-world driving situations.

Another test conducted by the Transport Research Laboratory in London took it a step further. It found that drivers who texted had slower response times, were more likely to drift in and out of lanes and even drove worse than those who were driving while high on marijuana [source: Nugent]. The study found that reaction times for those who texted while driving were 35 percent worse than when they drove without any distractions at all. When driving while intoxicated, the reaction time was only 12 percent worse than when the driver was sober and driving without any texting distractions [source: Nugent]. The researchers also found that there was a significant decrease in ability to maintain a safe driving distance between vehicles while texting and steering control dropped by 91 percent compared to driving without distraction [source: Nugent]. One of the study's commissioners eventually concluded that texting while driving is one of the most dangerous things a driver could do while behind the wheel of a car.

2012 Honda Insight Gets Updated

The 2012 Honda Insight gets updated.

Honda’s venerable hybrid will become slightly more fuel-efficient thanks to substantial aerodynamic improvements.

Combining a new grille and front bumper with reduced engine friction, and improvements to the CVT and  air-conditioning system, the 2012 Insight will produce 96 g/km of CO2, or 57 mpg on the European cycle (which typically is about 10 to 20 percent higher than the U.S. cycle).

In the U.S., Honda’s improvements could help the Insight yield anywhere from 45.6 mpg to 51.3 mpg. However, it’s still unconfirmed whether we’ll be receiving these updates on this side of the pond.

The 2011 Honda Insight yields 40 mpg city and 43 mpg highway. Additional information on the automaker’s only dedicated hybrid model should become available in the coming weeks.

What cars have the lowest cost of ownership?

What cars have the lowest cost of ownership? Read on to find out!

There's more to the cost of owning a car than just paying the sticker price; in fact, the car with the lower sticker price might just turn out to be more expensive over the long haul. In other words, you might have the cash to buy a car, but not the income to afford to own it. That's the difference between price and total cost of ownership (TCO).

The total cost of ownership (over five years) includes six factors:

      • Depreciation accounts for 46 percent of TCO (the average model depreciates 65 percent).
      • Fuel costs mount up quickly -- especially for SUVs -- constituting 26 percent.
      • Interest varies according to vehicle price, but in a typical case (a five-year loan, 15 percent down, 6.4 percent interest), it accounts for 12 percent of TCO.
      • Insurance costs vary according to age, location, driving record, vehicle make and model but on average account for 11 percent.
      • Maintenance and repair constitute 4 percent of TCO on average.
      • Sales tax costs owners about as much as maintenance and repair, assuming the national average of 4.9 percent.

So which cars have the lowest cost of ownership? It's a complicated question and your circumstances may vary (especially if you include used cars in the mix), but here are some good candidates among 2010 vehicles. The list also indicates the award-winners in their categories for 2010:

Nissan Versa (also best compact car), Toyota Yaris (also best subcompact car), Hyundai Accent, Honda Civic, Scion xD (also best compact wagon), Honda Fit, Toyota Corolla, Toyota Prius
(also best mid-sized car), Nissan Cube, Chevrolet Aveo5

2012 Honda Civic Leads KBB.com’s Compact Sedan Comparison

s

The 2012 Honda Civic leads KBB.com’s compact sedan comparison.

The all-new 2012 Honda Civic came out on top in a recent compact sedan comparison by Kelley Blue Book’s KBB.com. Although the Civic tied for the top stop with the Hyundai Elantra, editors found that the Civic had its own distinct strong points.

“At some point in time, most everyone drives a compact sedan, whether it is a commuter car, second car, empty nester car or even a rental car,” said Jack R. Nerad, executive editorial director and executive market analyst for Kelley Blue Book’s kbb.com, noting the importance of this segment.

Specifically, editors praised the Civic’s value and performance. Like with previous generations, the new Civic “does it better all at once,” and “succeeds a lot and fails nowhere.” While each compact sedan in the comparison fits the needs of a certain buyer with his or her own set of priorities, the Civic was the most well-rounded of the bunch.

“Because this vehicle class is an inevitable part of most American drivers’ lives, we wanted to put the top new models up against each other head-to-head to see how they would fare,” added Nerad. “While the caliber of vehicles is better than ever in the compact sedan category across the board, each model proved to have different strengths and weaknesses that potential buyers should know about before they make their final decision.  The cars are in the same segment, but they certainly aren’t the same, and we found that each meets the needs of a particular set of consumers.”

The 2012 Honda Fit To Get Updated

The 2012 Honda Fit will get updated styling and equipment.

Honda’s versatile, fuel-efficient, and fun five-door now features a quieter interior and a range of other new features for the 2012 model year. The B-segment continues to be an important segment as more consumers search for fuel efficient cars, and the 2012 Honda Fit will maintain its appeal thanks to its reasonably-sized exterior dimensions and cavernous interior.

For 2012, the Fit will receive new standard equipment and a few minor updates to its styling. Sport models will feature new grilles, black headlight bezels and a new finish for the 16-inch alloy wheels. The base model will boast body-colored mirrors and a new wheel cover design. Last but not least, the Fit Sport will include steering wheel-mounted audio controls, as well as Bluetooth hands-free telephone on navigation-equipped cars.

The 2012 Fit will continue to be powered by Honda’s venerable 1.5-liter four cylinder engine, which produces 117 horsepower and 106 pound-feet of torque. Buyers will be able to choose between a five-speed manual or a five-speed automatic transmission.

The Honda Fit may not change much for the new model year, but it will continue to offer an award-winning formula. Awards and accolades for the Fit include:

  • Car and Driver Magazine’s “10Best Cars” list continuously from 2007 through 20112
  • In the 2011 J.D. Power and Associates Initial Quality Study, the Fit earned the highest initial quality score in its segment
  • The Fit has also been named a 2011 Top Recommended vehicle by Edmunds.com in its 2011 New Car Sedan Buying Guide.
  • Fit captured the 2011 Residual Value Award for “Best Sub Compact Car” from ALG.

Honda Finishes Second In The 2011 J.D. Power and Associates Initial Quality Study (IQS)

Honda finishes second in the 2011 J.D. Power and Associates Initial Quality Study.

It was Honda’s best performance ever in the annual study, which this year evaluated data from more than 73,000 buyers/lessees of new 2011 vehicles after 90 days of ownerships.

Three of the company’s manufacturing plants also received IQS honors, including two of its facilities here in America. Honda Manufacturing of Indiana, which builds the all-new Honda Civic, was one of only three plants in the world to win a J.D. Power Platinum award this year, and the automaker’s complex in East Liberty, Ohio, where the Honda Accord Crosstour, CR-V and Element are built, took home a Bronze award.

Not coincidentally, all of those vehicles finished in the top three of their segments for Honda.

“Creating products of the highest quality and value is the foundation of our business, and it begins with a deep understanding of the customer,” said Tetsuo Iwamura, president and CEO of American Honda Motor Co., Inc. “These results are an important demonstration of our focus on the customer and the tireless efforts put forth by Honda associates throughout our organization—in R&D, in manufacturing and in sales—to exceed their high expectations of Honda and Acura.”

Five Honda’s Win 2011 “Lowest True Cost to Own” awards.

Five Honda’s Win 2011 “Lowest True Cost to Own” awards. Edmunds.com gives out the awards and it is based on a 5 year ownership period.

Among the winners were the Honda Accord Sedan, Accord Coupe, Civic, Ridgeline, and Pilot. Honda’s luxury arm, Acura, also made it onto the list of winners with the Acura MDX crossover.

“One of the key factors that pushed many of this year’s award winners over the top was their free maintenance plans, which can save car owners hundreds or even thousands of dollars over a five-year period,” said Danny Zhou, senior director of data products and operations at Edmunds.com. “The 2011 Volkswagen CC, for example, edged past its closest competitors in the Sedan $30K-$40K category in large part because it offers free maintenance for three years or 36,000 miles.”

Edmunds’ True Cost to Own data is based on a number of key factors including depreciation, interest on financing, taxes and fees, insurance premiums, fuel, maintenance, repairs and any federal tax credit that may be available. After taking these variables into consideration, Honda vehicles excelled in providing value over five-years.

10 Most Annoying Things Other Drivers Do

What driving habits annoy you the most?  Tell us!  Or just check out this Top Ten list created by Car Talk radio personalities Click and Clack:

It's a known fact that everyone reading this is an above-average driver — and that each of us always displays deep and abiding civility toward our fellow travelers. So we're sure you won't recognize yourself in any of the items listed below.

But what about all those other jerks on the road?

What things do other drivers do that annoy you most? Here's our list, with an invitation to share your pet peeves below.

Yours in Pounding the Steering Wheel,

Tom and Ray Magliozzi, Car Talk
Click and Clack, the Tappet Brothers

1. Talking on a cell phone

When you're talking on your cell phone, you're as likely to cause an accident as when you're legally drunk. Now, what's your excuse? What's more annoying than a driver who's willing to riskyour life so he can pick up his General Tso's chicken without waiting? Even when distracted drivers don't cause a wreck, they weave from lane to lane, create confusion in intersections and generally drive slower than other drivers around them while they're trying to do two things at once, leaving a gang of irate drivers in their wake.

Don't Be a Jerk: Put the phone down while you drive. You know about voice mail, right?

2. Driving too fast for road conditions

Just because a speed limit is 65 mph doesn't mean that's always the right speed. Snow, ice or rain can dramatically reduce your car's braking and handling abilities, as well as limit visibility. The right top speed for those conditions is that at which you feel safe and in control and able to react in time to anything that happens up ahead. That could be 40 mph. Or zero mph.

Drivers who fly past you at 50 mph when conditions call for 15 mph are not just risking their own lives — they might take you with them. If they lose control, they could easily spin into you, knocking you off the road and down an embankment. Or, at the very least, they could cover your windshield with a thick film of slush or rain, leaving you temporarily blinded. Annoying? We'd say so.

Happy 4th of July!

I love to see the starry flag
That floats above my head.
I love to see its waving folds
With stripes of white and red.
“Be brave,” say the red stripes.
“Be pure,” say the white.
“Be true,” say the bright stars.
“And stand for the right.”

Honda Safety Shines As New Civic Is Named IIHS “Top Safety Pick”

Even though the Honda Civic has been completely redesigned for the new model year, engineers worked to ensure it did share at least one thing with the outgoing model: The 2012 Civic sedan, just like the 2011 version, has been recognized as a “Top Safety Pick” by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The honor goes only to vehicles with electronic stability control and the highest possible scores in the IIHS’ tests for side, front, rear and rollover crash protection, so it’s a notable achievement for the Civic.

And it’s no coincidence that the Civic offers some notable standard safety technologies, too. These include Honda’s Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) body structure, which is used throughout the automaker’s lineup. It’s an exclusive body design specifically developed to manage potential crash forces at the front of the vehicle to reduce their affect on the passenger compartment. Also standard on the Civic are safety features like vehicle stability assist, traction control, anti-lock brakes and a full range of airbags, including side-curtain airbags, dual-stage multiple-threshold front airbags, a driver’s front side airbag and a front passenger’s side airbag with an occupant-detection system.

Further, the IIHS “Top Safety Pick” status applies to the entire Civic sedan lineup:

  • The original Civic, now boasting EPA ratings of 28 mpg city/39 mpg highway/32 mpg combined
  • Civic HF, specially enhanced to break the 40-mpg mark, with EPA ratings of 29 mpg city/41 mpg highway/33 mpg combined
  • Civic Hybrid, with the best EPA marks of any four-door sedan—44 mpg city/44 mpg highway/44 mpg combined
  • Civic GX, which runs on readily available compressed natural gas instead of gasoline and will be offered in all 50 states
  • Civic Si, packing a 201-hp I4 engine for high-efficiency high performance

Happy Memorial Day!

How are you planning to celebrate/ honor Memorial Day weekend?  Is the holiday a chance to barbeque and hang with friends, or is it a more solemn occasion as you remember a loved one?  Share with us!

But no matter how you choose to spend your weekend, we want you to stay safe.  Here are some tips for grill safety this weekend:

  • Keep food covered or refrigerated until ready to be cooked.  Cook meat to 170 degrees Farenheit as a minimum.
  • Cooking (by any method) of meats (particularly red meat and chicken) at very high temperatures until surface charring occurs can cause cancer causing substances (Heterocyclic Amines (HCA)) to form.   To avoid this, use marinades and turn frequently.
  • Inspect your grill before you ignite to ensure everything is in working order.
  • Don't use a grill indoors including garages, overhangs and canopies.
  • When using a grill, you should use a 10-foot perimeter from anything combustible, including your house.
  • Do not allow children and pets to play near a grill.
  • Only use approved ignition fluids – don't use gasoline to ignite a grill.
  • Keep a fire extinguisher, garden hose or bucket of sand nearby to douse a grill fire.

KBB.com names Honda Odyssey “Gold Standard”

KBB.com names Honda Odyssey “Gold Standard.”

Calling it “the gold standard of minivans,” the automotive experts at Kelley Blue Book’s KBB.com website recently named the 2011 Honda Odyssey to their “Top 10 Family Cars of 2011” list. The only minivan to make the lineup, the Odyssey won over the KBB.com analysts with a package that’s “designed to please the whole family.”

Judging for the honor was based on family-oriented characteristics such as safety, comfort, economy of operation, child-friendliness, a reasonable purchase price and good resale value—all of which come standard on the Odyssey.

The cabin of Honda’s minivan is notable for its incredible functionality, too. Second-row seats are wider, more comfortable and more configurable than ever before, with the ability to slide both fore and aft as well as laterally. As a result, the Odyssey’s second row can quickly and simply go from providing high levels of comfort for two adults to the ability to fit three child seats in just minutes. Third-row seating also has been greatly enhanced by Honda’s groundbreaking 60/40 split Magic Seat system. It provides extra comfort, along with increased legroom, and can quickly fold down to handle cargo with just a single touch of a button.

Top 10 Auto Myths Revealed

The editors of MSN Autos have created a list of the Top 10 most popular auto myths. In the following article they address them.

Myth 1: Red cars get more speeding tickets.

Debunked: While they're radiant and retina-shocking, red cars are not more likely to get a speeding ticket, according to the Insurance Information Institute and Insurance Trade Association. This myth is based on an optical illusion: a red car looks as if it is going faster than it is because red is an aggressive color. But a radar gun is color-blind. The only way to avoid a speeding ticket is not to speed. If you have no self-control (we don't either), here are a couple of nifty tips to avoid being nailed by Smokey on your next trip: (1) Travel in a pack of cars to avoid being singled out — let a rabbit speed ahead of you and get the ticket instead; (2) Stay in the right lane whenever possible, because many officers look to the fast lane for speeders.

Myth 2: Driving with the windows open to stay cool saves gas.

Debunked: According to Ford's Driving Skills for Life Web site, the power-robbing effect of air-conditioning compressors is less hurtful than the aerodynamic drag created by speeding down the road with the windows open, especially at highway speeds. Running the air conditioner will sacrifice a few ponies, but the turbulence caused by open windows will require more horsepower, and thus cause the vehicle to consume more fuel to maintain a steady speed. Ford's Web site recommends using the recirculation feature because it is more efficient to cool already cool air from the cabin than outside air. Another nifty tip is to run the vent/fan setting once the cabin cools down.

Myth 3: Letting an engine idle saves fuel.

Debunked: This one may have rung true when carburetors ruled the roost, but not now that fuel injection is the norm. Start-up in most modern vehicles is lean and efficient, and the longer the interval between shutdown and start-up, the greater the fuel savings. Engine-off strategies are prevalent in hybrids for a reason: they improve mileage. Even the all-gasoline 2012 Maserati Quattroporte will be using start-stop technology to improve its fuel efficiency.

Myth 4: Hybrid batteries won’t last.

Debunked: Doubters were quick to question the longevity of hybrid battery cells and cite their substantial replacement cost to scare people away from these green machines. Check the warranty card. Manufacturers are offering warranties that start at 80,000 miles and go up from there. Furthermore, the federal government tested battery packs up to 160,000 miles and experienced no issues. Hybrid taxicabs have reported 200,000-plus miles without the need for a battery replacement.

Honda Civic GX Is Powered by Natural Gas

Honda-Civic-GX-image-e1302616909563

The natural gas powered Honda Civic GX starts at $25,490.

“We’re asking the GX purchaser to make far fewer sacrifices than any other alternative fuel vehicle,” Eric Rosenberg, who heads Honda’s alternative fuel vehicle program here in the U.S.

The GX can drive up to 250 miles on a single tank and only takes a few minutes to fill at public or home fueling stations. The Leaf has a range of around 100 miles and requires 30 minutes to partially charge at a quick-charge station and seven to 20 hours using a standard 220 or 110 volt outlet.

Although most consumers are likely unaware of the available of the natural gas powered Civic GX, years of selling the vehicle in select markets may prove to be valuable experience.

“The whole idea was for us as a company to learn how to retail the car,” Honda’s Rosenberg said. “It is a little different, it has a few idiosyncrasies.”

Honda CR-Z both affordable and fun

Honda-CR-Z-image-e1302103450438

This car starts at just $19,000 making it a very affordable hybrid.

Under the hood of this sleek, short compact is a 1.5-liter gasoline engine along with an electric motor. This system doesn’t allow the CR-Z to run on electric power alone like some other hybrid models, but the electric motor assists the engine and helps the CR-Z achieve an impressive 35 miles per gallon in the city and 39 miles per gallon on the highway.

The CR-Z is the only hybrid vehicle available with a six-speed manual gearbox, adding to the sportiness quotient. For those that don’t want to shift their own gears, a CVT automatic transmission is also available.

Honda To Restart Limited Car Production In Japan

02_2012_Civic_Hybrid

Limited production will resume in Japan on Honda vehicles beginning in April.  How many cars will be produced depends on part availability which has  been interrupted since the earthquake and tsunami that rocked Japan earlier this month.

Honda says that two assembly plants will restart April 11, but they will only reach half of pre-quake production capacity. However, all of the automaker’s plants will be running once again on that date.

“However, as the parts supply situation remains fluid, production of component parts and vehicles at Honda plants will resume at approximately 50 percent at the outset,” Honda said in a statement today.

Other automakers are also slowing restarting plants that were damaged in the wake of the disaster. Mazda, for example, will start producing cars at itsHiroshima and Hofu plants Monday, but will also stop short of full-scale production.

Honda Opens Red Cross Donation Site

japan_earthquake_cars_image-e1300975296864

Honda has created a new website to allow customers, suppliers and others to support the Japan disaster recovery effort through the Red Cross. The site was initially established to cater to Honda and Acura dealers, but the site has since been opened to the public.

The new website comes after Honda donated $3.7 million toward the relief and recovery effort, along with 1,000 Honda generators. Honda is also matching contributions made by Honda employees to the Red Cross relief and recovery effort.

“We are making this special website available for contributions based on the outpouring of support and messages of sympathy and concern we have received from so many friends of Honda,” said Stephan Morikawa, Assistant Vice President of Corporate Community Relations at American Honda. “We are humbled and deeply appreciative of the concern shown for our Japanese associates, their families, and all those affected by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami.”

If you are interested in supporting the recovery efforts in Japan, you can make a donation at Honda’s America Red Cross website.

Honda Confirms High-Performance CR-Z

Honda-CR-Z-image

Honda’s CR-Z is a unique offering that combines the fuel-efficiency of a hybrid with the performance of a sports car. That balance has still left some wanting more — particularly enthusiasts.  According to Autocar, Honda has confirmed that a faster version of the CR-Z hybrid is in development. It will continue to be a hybrid, but it will likely receive a quicker version of Honda’s next-generation IMA hybrid system.  At this point, few details have emerged, but it will likely produce at least 160 horsepower and it may even receive a turbocharger.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

F2_Saint-Patricks-Day_588x441_copy

Check out these fun facts and may the luck of the Irish smile upon ya!

Fun Facts about St. Patrick's Day

St. Patrick’s Day is observed on March 17 because that is the feast day of St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. It is believed that he died on March 17 in the year 461 AD. It is also a worldwide celebration of Irish culture and history. St. Patrick’s Day is a national holiday in Ireland, and a provincial holiday in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador.

The actual color of St. Patrick is blue. Green became associated with St. Patrick's Day during the 19th century. Green, in Irish legends, was worn by fairies and immortals, and also by people to encourage their crops to grow.

St. Patrick did not actually drive snakes out of Ireland; the snakes represent the pagans that he converted to Christianity.

The very first St. Patrick's Day parade was not in Ireland. It was in Boston in 1737.

In Chicago, on St. Patrick's Day, the rivers are dyed green.

In Seattle, there is a ceremony where a green stripe is painted down the roads.

Most Catholics attend mass in the morning and then attend the St. Patrick's Day parade.

Shamrocks are worn on the lapel on this day.

In Ireland on St. Patrick’s Day, people traditionally wear a small bunch of shamrocks on their jackets or caps. Children wear orange, white and green badges, and women and girls wear green ribbons in their hair

Many young people dye their hair green for the special day.

Many people wear green on this holiday to avoid being pinched.

The phrase, "Drowning The Shamrock" is from the custom of floating the shamrock on the top of whiskey before drinking it. The Irish believe that if you keep the custom, then you will have a prosperous year.

Many bars in the United States, and abroad, serve green beer to celebrate St. Patty's Day.

Fun Facts about the Irish

34 million Americans have Irish ancestry, according to the 2003 US Census. That’s almost nine times the population of Ireland, which has 4.1 million people.

Nine of the people who signed our Declaration Of Independence were of Irish origin, and nineteen Presidents of the United States proudly claim Irish heritage -- including our first President, George Washington.

Some American towns have “Irish” names. You could visit: Mount Gay-Shamrock, West Virginia; Shamrock Lakes, Indiana; Shamrock, Oklahoma; Shamrock, Texas; Dublin, California and Dublin, Ohio.

The harp is the symbol of Ireland. The color green is also commonly associated with Ireland, also known as “the Emerald Isle.”

The Irish flag is green, white and orange. The green symbolizes the people of the south, and orange, the people of the north. White represents the peace that brings them together as a nation.

The name “leprechaun” has several origins. It could be from the Irish Gaelic word “leipreachan,” which means “a kind of aqueous sprite.” Or, it could be from “leath bhrogan,” which means “shoemaker.”

Fun Facts about Clovers

According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the highest number of leaves found on a clover is 14.

One estimate suggests that there are about 10,000 regular three-leaf clovers for every lucky four-leaf clover.

Legend says that each leaf of the clover means something: the first is for hope, the second for faith, the third for love and the fourth for luck.

Have no fear, Honda’s still here!

02_2012_Civic_Hybrid

Following the earthquake and tsunami in Japan, Honda shut down several of its plants to make power and infrastructure checks. A special taskforce has also been employed to evaluate what measures need to be taken in the event that component stocks run short.

Here in North America, Honda plants are operating normally. Halted production in Japan has largely affected exports to international markets, but Honda’s U.S. operations have not yet been impacted.

The automaker’s Suzuka plant in central Japan has already resumed production. However, Honda’s Sayama plant, north of Tokyo and closer to the epicenter, has remained closed. The Sayama plant makes several U.S.-bound models, including the Fit, Accord, and CR-Z. The plant also produces the Acura RL and the Acura TSX.

At Honda’s R&D center in Tochigi prefecture, one person died and 30 were injured when the quake toppled a cafeteria wall. No other injuries were reported.

For now, several Japanese automakers, including Honda, have extended the production suspension. It’s expected to be a few more days before cars begin rolling off the assembly lines in Japan as they did before the quake.

Civic Leads Latest List Of Honda Award Winners

Honda-Civic-image-e1299509957447

Honda’s high-quality, high-value lineup earned further impressive kudos from noted industry third parties recently, scoring recognition in both the U.S. News & World Report Best Car for the Money ratings and the Strategic Vision Total Quality Index.

In the former, which rely on U.S. News automotive analysis and five-year total cost of ownership data from TrueCar.com, the Honda Civic was named the Best Compact Car for the Money as a “well-rounded car” that “offers a winning combination of substance and style that make it an exceptional daily driver.” In addition, with “one of the largest cargo holds in the class, innovative interior storage options, good fuel economy and spunky performance,” the Honda Fit took home honors as the Best Hatchback for the Money.

Notably, the Civic also was the co-leader in the Small Car segment in Strategic Vision’s Total Quality Index, finishing in a virtual tie with—the Civic. No, that’s no misprint. Strategic Vision considered the Civic and the innovative Civic hybrid as two different entries, and both finished with nearly identical scores that were some 20 points ahead of the next nearest finisher.

Daylight Savings Time Begins on March 13

Daylight savings time is coming up this weekend.  Don’t forget to set your clocks forward!

Every year, daylight savings time seems to take people by surprise. In the United States, daylight savings time begins on March 13 at 2 a.m. local time except in parts of Arizona and Hawaii. As the popular saying goes, clocks need to "spring forward" to observe the change. In other words, clocks need to be set ahead by one hour when the clock strikes 2 a.m.

Honda at Sundance Film Festival

05_2012_Civic_EX_L_Coupe

Certainly garnering recognition as “best supporting automaker,” Honda turned in a star performance at the recent Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, where the company debuted its new “Power of Dreams Experience” before thousands of attendees.

The interactive exhibit showcased Honda’s dedication to innovation, environmental leadership and advanced technology, courtesy of vehicles like the Honda FCX Clarity and the Honda CR-Z Sport Hybrid. The first, the world’s most advanced fuel-cell electric vehicle, also is the only one from a mainstream automaker being leased to the public today. Relying solely on domestic energy resources, the FCX Clarity delivers a dynamic driving experience but greatly reduces the amount of carbon dioxide being released into the air, since its only emissions are water vapor. The CR-Z, shown in Sundance as a cutaway, is the first hybrid with a six-speed manual transmission and delivers an athletic mix of nimble performance and hybrid-like fuel economy, along with a bold, aggressive exterior design.

In keeping with the festival’s focus on film, Honda had a cinema premiere of its own as well. “The Undying Dream,” the latest in Honda’s series of documentary films exploring the theme of “Dream the Impossible,” had its inaugural public screening and stars pro big-wave surfer Laird Hamilton. He’s joined in the film by motorcycle racers and Honda employees, as all share stories about what happens when a dream takes hold of your life and drives you to new success.

Honda Tops Consumer Reports’ Reliability Study

Honda-Logo

Honda vehicles are known for their reliability, and that reputation remains untarnished in the latest testing by Consumer Reports. Honda averaged the highest score in the publication’s recent reliability rankings.

Following in a close second on the reliability list was Subaru, which averaged just one point less than Honda. Although Subaru is closing the gap, Honda is confident that its reputation will continue.

“I don’t think there is a decrease in Honda’s quality,” said Chris Martin, a Honda spokesman. “I think what they’re saying is that compared to others, we aren’t as far ahead as we once were.”

Consumer Reports suggests that there’s plenty to be optimistic about. The close rankings show that all automakers are improving when it comes to reliability.

Updated 2012 Honda Civic Gets 41 MPG

The production version of the 2012 Honda Civic has been unveiled, looking very similar to the Civic concepts that were on display at the Detroit Auto Show. Now in its ninth-generation, the new Civic promises to be even more fuel efficient than before, while retaining the unique style and reliability that car buyers have come to expect from the Civic.  For 2012, the Civic will get a new base model called the HF. The Civic HF will be the most fuel-efficient gasoline-only powered Civic in the lineup. It will feature a 1.8-liter i-VTEC engine and should earn a competitive 41 miles per gallon on the freeway.

The Civic Hybrid will also continue to be offered for those seeking high-mileage. But for 2012, the Hybrid will be outfitted for the first time with a lithium-ion battery and a larger 1.5-liter i-VTEC engine. Despite its larger engine, it’s still expected to get a combined 45 mpg.

Honda Debuts Sleek and Sophisticated Concepts for All-New 2012 Civic Si Coupe and Civic Sedan Models

The Honda Civic Si Concept coupe and Civic Concept sedan are making world debuts at the North American International Auto Show today, providing the first official glimpse at the styling direction of the all-new, ninth-generation 2012 model set to go on sale this spring, the company announced.
"The Civic is known for providing a balance of 'just-right' packaging, fun-to-drive character and outstanding fuel economy, at a price that even first-time buyers can afford," said John Mendel, executive vice president of sales for American Honda. "The redesigned Civic builds on this legacy and promises to be the best Civic yet."

The 2012 Civic embraces the company's vision as a "Civic for all people," a phrase originally expressed in defining the goal of the first-generation Civic. With the widest array of engine choices available in its class, the 2012 Civic lineup intends to meet the needs of an increasing group of compact-vehicle buyers with a renewed vision of a "Civic for all people." The diverse vehicle range includes a sedan and a coupe with conventional gasoline models, two sporty "Si" performance versions, along with one hybrid and a natural gas alternative-fuel variant. Collectively the depth of the Civic line offers a compelling balance between fuel economy, low emissions and fun-to-drive performance unlike any other vehicle in the industry.
