For the 2011 model year, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) introduced tougher, more rigorous testing procedures to help provide more information to consumers about the performance of safety features and crash-avoidance technologies. To provide an idea of how tough these new standards are, consider that of the 40 different vehicle models tested so far using the new procedures, just six have received overall five-star scores from NHTSA. And of those six vehicles, only one was honored with five-star ratings in each of the three individual NHTSA tests. That car? None other than the 2011 Honda Accord sedan, which earned five stars for frontal-crash, side-crash and rollover protection.
